Vodafone Idea Expands 5G Coverage in West Bengal, Targeting Industrial and Tourism Hubs

Vodafone Idea has expanded its 5G services in West Bengal, with rollout planned across several additional cities by June, as per PTI news reports. The company said services are currently available in Kolkata, Siliguri, Malda, Haldia, and Berhampur.
The next phase of expansion will cover Durgapur, Asansol, Habra-Ashoknagar, Burdwan, Kharagpur, Gangtok and Darjeeling.
Industrial Regions Included in Plan
The company said the expansion has been planned around areas with higher mobile data demand and rising network usage. Several of the cities included in the rollout are industrial and commercial centres with steady business activity.
Durgapur and Asansol are known for steel and manufacturing operations, while Haldia remains an important port and petrochemical region. Kharagpur and Burdwan are also key urban centres with educational and transport-related activity.
Tourism Markets Also Covered
Along with industrial towns, the rollout also includes tourism-driven locations such as Darjeeling and Gangtok. Both cities receive large visitor numbers during peak travel seasons and have seen increasing digital and mobile internet usage in recent years.
The company stated that the deployment strategy was focused on locations with significant public movement and growing smartphone penetration. Areas with high data consumption were prioritised during the rollout process.
Company Statement on Expansion
Sovan Mukherjee, Business Head for Kolkata, Rest of Bengal, Assam and the North-East, said the network expansion was aimed at “high-demand locations” across industrial, commercial and tourism segments.
Telecom operators across India have continued to expand 5G coverage since commercial services were launched in 2022. Companies have gradually widened presence beyond metro cities as internet usage rises in smaller urban markets.
