VA Tech WABAG Limited has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) to develop a city-wide looped water transmission network in Chennai. The project is part of the Chennai Climate Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project (CCRWSSP) and is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The project will be executed through a joint venture in which WABAG will act as the leader. The initiative aims to build a city-wide water grid for Greater Chennai City (GCC), enabling flexible water routing, improved pressure management, and stronger reliability during both normal operations and emergency situations.
The proposed ring main system will strengthen Chennai’s bulk water transmission infrastructure by connecting pumping stations, service reservoirs, and key network nodes. The system will help balance water flows across zones, reduce dependence on single transmission corridors, and improve the resilience of the city’s water distribution network.
The scope of the project includes development of bulk transmission pipelines, feeder mains, pumping stations, and underground tanks. It will also integrate with the central SCADA system and involve testing and commissioning of the entire network.
The project is scheduled to be completed within 54 months, followed by 10 years of operations and maintenance. Once operational, the system is expected to improve Chennai’s ability to manage water resources efficiently and ensure more reliable supply across the city.
