Telecom stocks were in focus on June 9, with shares of Vodafone IdeaBharti Airtel and Bharti Hexacom rising after a favourable court ruling related to spectrum charges. The development could reduce potential liabilities for telecom operators and improve investor sentiment toward the sector.

Telecom Stocks Gain Up to 4%

Shares of major telecom companies traded higher during Tuesday's session:

  • Vodafone Idea surged nearly 4% to ₹14.90.
  • Bharti Hexacom gained around 1%.
  • Bharti Airtel also rose about 1%.

Over the past month, Vodafone Idea has been one of the strongest performers in the sector, gaining around 20%, while Bharti Airtel and Bharti Hexacom have also outperformed the broader market.

Why Are Telecom Stocks Rising?

The rally followed a favourable ruling by the Bombay High Court on the One-Time Spectrum Charge (OTSC) issue.

The court struck down the government's retrospective levy of spectrum charges on telecom companies, stating that the financial terms of telecom licences could not be changed years after they were granted.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had introduced the charge in 2012 for operators holding GSM spectrum beyond 6.2 MHz, with the rule applied retrospectively from 2008.

Conclusion

Telecom stocks moved higher after a favourable court ruling on spectrum charges eased concerns over potential liabilities for operators.
