Tata Steel has received an exemption under US tariff rules that will allow steel processed in Britain to enter the American market at a lower duty rate, even if the raw material used in production is sourced from outside the UK, as per The Bloomberg reports.
Under US trade measures introduced during the presidency of Donald Trump, most steel imports into the country are subject to a 50% tariff. The UK, however, has been granted a lower 25% rate under a separate arrangement.
Steel imports into the US are generally required to meet “melt-and-pour” conditions to qualify for the lower tariff category. These rules require the steel to be produced entirely within the exporting country, beginning from the melting stage.
In Tata Steel UK’s case, the exemption allows steel processed in Britain to continue qualifying as UK-origin material, even though the substrate used in production is imported from overseas operations.
The arrangement applies to steel processed at Port Talbot Steelworks in Wales. Tata Steel stopped primary steelmaking at the site in 2024 after closing its blast furnaces as part of a restructuring programme.
Since then, the plant has relied on imported substrate, including steel supplied from the company’s operations in the Netherlands. The imported material is processed in Wales before being exported to the US market.
Tata Steel has said the exemption shows the temporary transition period at Port Talbot while new electric-arc furnaces are being developed.
The new system is expected to use electricity and recycled scrap metal instead of traditional blast furnace production. The company has stated that the change is part of its plan to restructure steelmaking operations in Britain.

As of May 20, 2026, 12:10 pm, Tata Steel Ltd share price was trading at ₹204.55, a 2.26% decrease from the previous closing price.
The exemption allows Tata Steel UK to continue exports to the US under the reduced UK tariff rate while operations at Port Talbot remain in transition following the closure of its blast furnaces.
