Tata Steel has commissioned new manufacturing facilities at its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, alongside the launch of expansion work at Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL). The combined investment across these projects is around ₹9,067 crore.

The new facilities include galvanising and annealing lines for specialised steel, a slurry pipeline project and an air separation unit. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the facilities and laid the foundation for the expansion projects.

Two Galvanising Lines Add 1 Million Tonnes Capacity

The Kalinganagar plant now has two continuous galvanising lines with a combined capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). These will help Tata Steel produce coated advanced high-strength steel for automobile and appliance manufacturers.

A continuous annealing line with a capacity of 0.9 mtpa has also been commissioned to support the production of specialised automotive steel grades.

Slurry Pipeline to Connect Mines With Plant

Phase I of a 7 mtpa slurry pipeline project has been commissioned to transport iron ore fines from Tata Steel's Kalamang mines to Kalinganagar.

The company expects the underground pipeline to reduce reliance on road and rail transport and improve raw material supply.

Linde India's new air separation unit will produce 3,600 tonnes of oxygen, 1,940 tonnes of nitrogen and 120 tonnes of argon daily.

NINL Expansion Includes Sustainability Upgrades

The NINL expansion will include a blast furnace fume extraction system and zero effluent discharge measures. NINL operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel.

Tata Steel has separately approved ₹33,873 crore to expand its crude steelmaking capacity by 4.8 mtpa.
