Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) is set to complete five Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) for Kakinada-based San Maritime India Pvt. Ltd.. The vessels have been docked at SDHI’s Pipavav shipyard and will be completed under IR Class certification to serve the growing requirements of the offshore energy industry.

The project marks a significant step in strengthening India’s offshore vessel capabilities while boosting Indian-flag tonnage.

Boost to Indigenous Shipbuilding

The completion of these OSVs aligns with the Government of India’s focus on promoting self-reliant shipbuilding through financial assistance and incentive schemes. The initiative is expected to generate maritime employment and provide business opportunities to local vendors and service providers within the shipbuilding ecosystem.

The hulls were originally acquired by SDHI as part of its acquisition of Reliance Naval and Engineering Limited (RNEL) through the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) process. Subsequently, San Maritime acquired the hulls from SDHI for completion. While construction began under the previous regime, the revived shipyard will now execute and deliver the vessels under new leadership, underscoring operational readiness and execution capabilities.

Advanced Shipyard Infrastructure

Located on India’s west coast, the Pipavav shipyard offers extensive shipbuilding infrastructure. It houses the country’s largest dry dock measuring 662 meters by 65 meters, a wet basin of 340 meters by 60 meters, and a 1.2-kilometre dedicated waterfront for berthing, docking, and vessel launching. These capabilities position SDHI as a key player in large-scale shipbuilding and offshore vessel projects.

Conclusion

The completion of five OSVs reinforces Swan Defence’s strategic role in revitalising India’s shipbuilding sector. By leveraging world-class infrastructure and supporting indigenous capabilities, the company is contributing to maritime self-reliance and strengthening the nation’s offshore industry ecosystem.
