The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department has issued a tax demand of ₹124.65 crore to SpiceJet over the non-filing of GST returns for several months, as per PTI reports.

The airline has also received a show-cause notice proposing the cancellation of its GST registration.

According to reports citing officials, the notice was issued on May 25, 2026, after the carrier allegedly failed to submit pending returns within the prescribed timelines.

The department stated that the airline has yet to complete the required compliance process.

Demand Raised Following Provisional Assessment

The tax demand was raised after authorities carried out a provisional assessment under Section 62 of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act and State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) Act, 2017.

Section 62 allows tax authorities to assess tax liability when a registered taxpayer does not furnish returns despite being required to do so. Officials said the assessment was undertaken after repeated delays and irregularities in the filing of GST returns by the airline.

Month-Wise Tax Liability

As per details released by the department, the largest portion of the demand relates to the months of November and December.

The assessment includes a demand of ₹44.44 crore for November and ₹43.79 crore for December. For the following months, the department assessed ₹12.19 crore for January, ₹12.10 crore for February, and ₹12.12 crore for March.

The cumulative demand for the 5-month period stands at ₹124.65 crore.

Department Warns of Further Action

GST officials said SpiceJet had consistently filed returns late and committed repeated compliance irregularities. They added that the company continues to have pending filings despite the issuance of the show-cause notice.

According to the department, further action may be initiated under GST rules if the airline does not file the outstanding returns and meet its statutory obligations within the required timeframe.

SpiceJet Share Price Performance

As of June 1, 2026, 12:35 pm, SpiceJet Ltd share price was trading at ₹12.37, down 2.98% from the previous closing price.

Conclusion

The latest action by the GST Department includes both a tax demand of ₹124.65 crore and proceedings related to the airline's GST registration. The matter now rests on the company's response to the notice and its compliance with pending filing requirements.
