Reliance Jio is evaluating the development of a sovereign low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation for India as it looks to expand connectivity to remote parts of the country, Jio Chairman Akash Ambani said at Reliance Industries' 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The proposed satellite network is aimed at extending broadband access beyond the reach of terrestrial telecom infrastructure.
Speaking at the AGM, Akash Ambani said satellite communications would play an important role in connecting remote villages, island communities and border outposts where conventional telecom networks cannot easily reach.
According to Ambani, satellite connectivity will help bridge connectivity gaps in such regions.
Akash Ambani said Jio is also partnering with leading global satellite constellation providers to accelerate service availability while building its own sovereign satellite capability.
He added that the dual strategy is intended to address India's connectivity requirements while laying the foundation for a domestic satellite broadband platform.
To support its satellite ambitions, Jio is building ground station infrastructure in India.
According to Akash Ambani, these facilities will support both partner satellite constellations and any future satellites launched by the company, creating an integrated satellite broadband ecosystem.
According to bureau sources, Jio has submitted a proposal to space regulator IN-SPACe for a constellation that would operate at an altitude of around 650 kilometres and provide broadband as well as direct-to-device connectivity services.
The proposed network is expected to be deployed over the next 2 to 3 years.
If implemented at the proposed scale, the project could make Reliance the first Indian company to build a large low Earth orbit satellite constellation.
Alongside evaluating a sovereign low Earth orbit satellite constellation for India, Jio continues to expand its digital infrastructure through its 5G and broadband businesses. Jio's 5G subscriber base has crossed 268 million, while Jio AirFiber has connected 13 million homes, reflecting the company's focus on expanding connectivity across the country through both terrestrial and satellite-based networks.
