Ola’s push into artificial intelligence appears to have hit a roadblock, as its AI assistant ‘Kruti’ has gone offline across major platforms, including app stores and the web. The disruption has raised fresh concerns around the execution of Ola’s ambitious AI strategy under its Krutrim initiative.

Ola’s Kruti Goes Dark Across Platforms

Kruti, developed by Ola’s AI arm Krutrim, is currently inaccessible to users across Apple and Google app stores, as well as through its direct website. While the official domain returned a “site not found” error, users accessing it via alternate links were shown a message indicating temporary maintenance.

The assistant, which was also integrated into Ola’s ride-hailing ecosystem, is no longer functional on the platform. The company has not yet issued an official statement clarifying whether the outage is temporary or indicative of deeper operational challenges.

Setbacks Amid Layoffs and Funding Concerns

The development comes against the backdrop of internal restructuring and funding constraints. Krutrim had reportedly laid off employees from its linguistics team (critical for training AI models) last year. The exits of key executives and delays in fundraising have further added to uncertainty around the company’s AI roadmap.

Kruti was launched with significant expectations as an “agentic AI” platform capable of handling text, voice, and image-based interactions. It was positioned as a domestic alternative to global AI tools like ChatGPT, tailored for Indian users.

However, adoption challenges, including concerns over technical maturity and limited developer traction, have reportedly slowed momentum. Sources also indicate that the development of its next-generation model, Krutrim 3, has been stalled.

Ambitious Vision Faces Execution Hurdles

Krutrim was part of Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal’s broader vision to build a full-stack AI ecosystem, spanning large language models, cloud infrastructure, semiconductors, and AI applications. The company had achieved unicorn status in 2024 after raising US$50 million, marking a strong start for its AI ambitions.

Despite this, the lack of sustained funding and product-market fit appears to have slowed progress across multiple verticals.

Conclusion

The sudden unavailability of Kruti highlights the execution risks in building large-scale AI platforms. While Ola’s AI ambitions remain significant, the near-term trajectory will depend on resolving funding gaps, stabilising product development, and rebuilding user confidence in its ecosystem.
