NTPC Ltd is examining a proposal to set up 2 nuclear power units of 700 MW each in Bihar’s Banka district, as per The PTI report.
The combined capacity under consideration is 1,400 MW. The location is around 250 km from Patna, and the proposal is currently at a preliminary stage.
As per the reports, officials are carrying out a feasibility study to assess technical and site-related factors. A detailed project report will be prepared after this phase is completed.
No final investment decision has been taken so far, and timelines remain indicative at this stage.
Initial estimates place the project cost at about ₹25,000 crore. Around 1,000 acres of land may be required for the development.
The Bihar government has indicated support for the project and has assured water availability, which is essential for plant operations.
Industry estimates suggest that a 1 GW nuclear plant typically costs between ₹15,000 crore and ₹20,000 crore.
The development cycle, from planning to commissioning, usually takes at least 3 years, depending on regulatory clearances and construction progress.
NTPC is planning to build around 30 GW of nuclear capacity across different locations. This is in line with the government’s target of reaching 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. The company is also aiming to have at least 2 GW of nuclear capacity operational by 2032.
The company is also working on a nuclear project in Rajasthan through a joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd, with an estimated investment of ₹42,000 crore. NTPC’s total installed capacity stands at over 89,615 MW, covering coal, gas, hydro and renewable energy sources.
