NTPC Plans ₹17 Trillion Investment by 2037 to Expand Power Capacity and Boost Renewable Energy

State-owned power producer NTPC has announced plans to invest around ₹17 trillion by FY2037 to significantly expand its power generation capacity. The company aims to strengthen its presence across thermal, renewable and nuclear power as part of its long-term growth strategy while supporting India's energy security and clean energy transition.
NTPC Targets 250 GW Capacity by FY2037
NTPC plans to increase its total power generation capacity to 150 GW by FY2032 and further to 250 GW by FY2037.
Currently, the NTPC Group has a total portfolio capacity of 127 GW, including around 91 GW of operational capacity and 36 GW under construction. The planned expansion will help the company nearly triple its generation capacity over the next decade.
Renewable Energy to Drive Future Growth
Renewable energy is expected to become the largest contributor to NTPC's future capacity additions.
The company plans to increase its operational renewable energy capacity from around 12 GW currently to:
- 60 GW by FY2032
- 136 GW by FY2037
NTPC also plans to invest in energy storage systems to support the integration of renewable power into the electricity grid.
Nuclear Power Becomes a Key Focus
As part of its long-term strategy, NTPC is expanding its presence in the nuclear energy sector.
The company aims to develop:
- 6 GW of nuclear power capacity by FY2037
- 30 GW by 2047
To support these plans, NTPC is exploring suitable project locations across various Indian states.
Thermal Power Remains Part of the Strategy
While renewable energy will account for most future capacity growth, NTPC will continue expanding its thermal power business.
The company expects its coal-based generation capacity to increase from around 67 GW currently to approximately 91 GW under its existing expansion plans.
According to the company, coal-based power, renewable energy supported by storage systems and nuclear power will remain the 3 key pillars of India's long-term energy security.
Investment Strategy
The planned ₹17 trillion investment will gradually shift towards:
- Renewable energy projects
- Battery and energy storage systems
- Nuclear power projects
- Expansion of thermal generation where required
This balanced approach aims to meet rising electricity demand while supporting India's clean energy ambitions.
