NTPC is examining 34 locations across 13 states as part of its plans to develop 30 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2030, as per a Business Standard news report.

The update was given by Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh at the company’s 50th Annual General Meeting. Studies and discussions are underway for the proposed sites.

NTPC is handling its nuclear plans through NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Limited, its wholly owned subsidiary, and Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Limited, its joint venture with NPCIL. The 2.8 GW Mahi Banswara nuclear project in Rajasthan is among the projects currently being pursued.

Record Addition Takes Capacity to 89 GW

The company added 9.6 GW of power capacity during FY26, its highest annual addition to date. Non-fossil sources accounted for 5.48 GW of the new capacity, or nearly 60 per cent of the total addition.

NTPC’s installed capacity stood at around 89 GW at the end of FY26, with another 35.7 GW of capacity under construction. The company generated 432 billion units of electricity during the year, contributing around 24 per cent of India’s total power generation.

Thermal Fleet and Coal Production

NTPC’s coal-based power stations recorded a plant load factor of 72.04 per cent in FY26. Its captive coal production rose 6.2 per cent to 48.65 million tonnes, meeting about 18 per cent of its coal requirement.

The company is also making changes to its thermal fleet as renewable generation increases. It has issued an expression of interest for sub-critical units of up to 250 MW that can operate in two shifts to help meet changing demand and support renewable power.

Renewable Generation

NTPC Green Energy generated 14.6 billion units of electricity in FY26, more than twice the level recorded in the previous year.

The company is also developing battery and pumped storage projects and is exploring technologies such as CO2 storage and Redox flow batteries for longer-duration storage.

NTPC has set a capacity target of 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW of renewable energy. Its target for 2037 is 244 GW, excluding storage.

Future Targets

The company plans to spend around ₹16.86 trillion by FY37 across thermal, hydro, storage, renewable, mining and nuclear projects. Its immediate focus remains on completing projects under construction and progressing its nuclear and thermal plans.
