NHPC Limited has announced the commencement of commercial operations for Unit 2 of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project.
The 250 MW unit began commercial operations at midnight on December 23, 2025, following the successful completion of its trial run. This marks another significant milestone in the commissioning of the 2,000 MW project.
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is located at Gerukamukh on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. With an estimated project cost of around ₹27,000 crore, it is one of India’s most ambitious hydropower developments. The project is designed as a run-of-the-river scheme, aimed at maximising power generation while minimising environmental impact.
NHPC confirmed that the declaration of the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for Unit 2 has been made in compliance with Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
The announcement follows a series of earlier disclosures made by the company since October 2023, keeping stakeholders informed about the project’s progress.
The Subansiri Lower HE Project comprises eight units of 250 MW each, totaling 2,000 MW. With Unit 2 now operational, NHPC has reiterated that the commercial operation dates of the remaining units will be announced in due course.
The phased commissioning approach reflects the company’s focus on operational readiness and safety.
Once fully operational, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is expected to become India’s largest hydroelectric station. At 90% dependability, the project is projected to generate approximately 7,421.59 million units of electricity annually.
This output is expected to play a vital role in strengthening grid stability and supporting clean energy goals.
On December 22, 2025, NHPC share price opened at ₹76.61, touching the day’s low at ₹77.87, as of 12:12 PM on the NSE.
