
NHPC Limited has announced the commercial operation of another unit at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. The development marks progress in the commissioning of the 2000 MW project located across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The project is being developed in multiple units to gradually add power generation capacity to the grid.
According to the company’s regulatory filing, NHPC has declared the Commercial Operation Date (CoD) for Unit 1 of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. The unit, with a capacity of 250 MW, commenced commercial operations from 00:00 hours on March 20, 2026.
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has a total planned capacity of 2000 MW, consisting of eight generating units of 250 MW each.
With the declaration of commercial operation of Unit 1, three units of the project have now been commissioned. Unit 1 joins Unit 2 and Unit 3, which had already achieved commercial operation earlier.
The remaining units of the project are expected to be commissioned in phases. The company stated that updates regarding the commercial operation of the remaining units will be announced in due course.
On March 18, 2026, NHPC share price opened at ₹76.91, touching the day’s high at ₹77.50, as of 11:26 AM on the NSE.

NHPC is a Navratna public sector enterprise and serves as the Government of India’s flagship company in the hydroelectric power generation sector. The company mainly focuses on generating and supplying bulk electricity to various power utilities across the country. In addition to power generation, NHPC is also engaged in project management, construction and consultancy services for power projects, as well as electricity trading activities.
The commissioning of Unit 1 represents another step forward in the development of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. As additional units become operational, the project is expected to contribute further to power generation capacity in the region and support the country’s energy infrastructure.
