The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) have signed an MoU to set up the MCX-NISM Centre for Commodity Markets, as per The Economic Times news report. The agreement was signed at the Global Commodity Conclave 2026.

The centre will be based at NISM and will deal with research, training, and market awareness. MCX will provide its experience in commodity markets, while NISM will provide the academic and research facilities.

Research On Commodity Markets

The centre will undertake applied research on commodity derivatives and other areas of the commodity market. It will also prepare policy papers and white papers covering market-related issues.

The work will include areas such as hedging, corporate risk management, compliance, and market practices. The centre will also study developments arising from changes in products and regulations.

Training Programmes

Training will cover the use of commodity derivatives for managing market risks. Other subjects will include suitability, ethical conduct, and compliance.

The programmes are expected to cater to market participants, corporates, investors, and academics. The initiative comes as India’s commodity derivatives market changes with new products and closer links with overseas markets.

Academic Activities

The centre is to support faculty development programmes, doctoral fellowships, and visiting scholar programmes. It will also hold academic conferences and other research-related programmes.

MCX will contribute to course content, instructional design, and assessment development. It will also take part in joint certifications and specialised workshops related to commodity markets.

Comments From MCX, NISM

Sashi Krishnan, Director, NISM, said the increasing complexity of commodity trading and changes in the regulatory framework had made specialised research and professional training more relevant.

Praveena Rai, MD and CEO, MCX, said the partnership would address the knowledge gap as commodity derivatives develop with new products, digital tools and regulatory changes.

Centre’s Details

NISM will provide the academic and research infrastructure for the centre, while MCX will contribute its market expertise.

Details on funding, programme timelines and specific research projects have not been disclosed by the two institutions.
