As per news report, Mumbai’s transport expenses have risen with Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) increasing the CNG price by ₹2, setting the new rate at ₹84 per kg.
This reflects ongoing global energy market disturbances contributing to cost hikes.
Beginning May 14, 2026, MGL adjusted CNG prices following several challenges, including disruptions to global energy supply chains and an escalating dependence on costly gas sources.
The rise in crude oil prices and the rupee's depreciation also factor in, positing a significant rise in procurement costs.
MGL’s statement highlights geopolitical tensions, notably the Iran conflict, as catalysts for these global supply and pricing challenges.
This adjustment has immediate ramifications for the city's transportation network. Of the approximately 12,80,000 vehicles using CNG in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), around 4,70,000 are autorickshaws, over 1,60,000 are taxis, and more than 5,00,000 are private cars.
Auto rickshaw operators face a cost increase of about ₹1.03/km, raising the estimated per-kilometre run cost above ₹18.3. The rise has sparked discussions among transport officials about revising fare rates.
Despite the price hike, MGL emphasises that CNG is still an economical choice for budget-conscious vehicle owners.
When compared to current petrol and diesel market prices, CNG continues to offer significant savings of 44% over petrol and 7% over diesel.
This retention of economic advantage maintains CNG’s position as a cost-effective energy alternative in the market.

As of May 14, 2026, at 9:16 AM, Mahanagar Gas share price on NSE was trading at ₹1,051.20 up by 0.41% from the previous closing price
The recent CNG price elevation in Mumbai underscores the intertwining of local market conditions with global energy market dynamics. While raising operational costs, particularly for public transport operators, CNG continues as a largely economical and preferred energy alternative amid fluctuating petrol and diesel prices.
