Mahanagar Gas and Indraprastha Gas share price saw an increase of over 3% in early trade after the government approved a new incentive scheme which is aimed at accelerating household PNG connections.

This scheme provides city gas distributors with additional lower-priced domestic gas for every incremental billed PNG connection above a set threshold.

Government Incentive Scheme for PNG Connections

The government has introduced an incentive scheme to enhance the economics of adding household PNG connections.

Under this scheme, eligible city gas distribution (CGD) entities will receive an additional 200 SCM of domestically produced, lower-priced APM gas for every incremental billed domestic PNG connection achieved above the threshold level set for their respective geographical areas.

The scheme, effective from September 1, 2026, will be implemented in two tranches over six months. The additional APM gas allocation will replace a portion of the costlier LNG currently procured by CGD entities for their CNG transport segment, potentially lowering their overall gas-sourcing costs.

Impact on Mahanagar Gas and Indraprastha Gas Shares

Following the announcement, Mahanagar Gas shares rose by 3.83% to ₹1,154, up from its previous close of ₹1,111.4. Similarly, Indraprastha Gas shares climbed 3.49% to ₹153.85 from its previous close of ₹149.39 on the National Stock Exchange.

The government estimates 1.74 crore domestic PNG connections across India. The new incentive is designed to encourage CGD companies to speed up conversions and expand household access to piped gas.

Lower Costs and Faster PNG Expansion

The government stated that the cost savings could significantly improve the economics of adding domestic PNG connections, potentially reducing the payback period for capital expenditure from around 10 years to about 3 years. This could give city gas distributors a stronger push to expand their household customer base.

Alongside this, other measures to encourage PNG adoption include faster regulatory clearances, efforts to bring VAT on natural gas down to 5%, and the launch of National PNG Drive 2.0. A unified digital portal to register and track new PNG connections is also being developed.

Conclusion

Mahanagar Gas and Indraprastha Gas shares increased by 3.83% and 3.49% respectively, following the government's approval of incentives to boost household PNG connections. The scheme offers additional lower-priced domestic gas for incremental billed connections, potentially reducing costs and encouraging expansion.
