As per news reports, the Magnum Ice Cream Company is planning a major strategic shift in India by transforming Kwality Wall’s into a fully dairy-based ice cream business, moving away from frozen desserts made using vegetable fats such as palm oil.
The development comes as the company increases its focus on India following the spin-off of Unilever’s global ice cream business. The company is reportedly betting on rising demand for milk-based products, which are often perceived by consumers as more premium and nutritious.
According to reports, nearly half of Kwality Wall’s product portfolio in India is expected to become dairy-based this year, while most of the transition could be completed by 2027.
The company, which owns brands such as Magnum, Cornetto, and Kwality Wall’s, is said to be repositioning itself as a pure ice cream player rather than a frozen dessert company. The strategy is aimed at improving product quality perception and strengthening its position in India’s growing ice cream market.
India’s ice cream market is estimated at around $2 billion and continues to witness strong growth driven by rising urban consumption and changing food preferences.
News reports also suggest that the company plans to aggressively expand its cold-chain infrastructure across India. It is reportedly targeting the deployment of nearly one million cold cabinets over time to improve product availability and distribution reach.
The company is also expected to focus on local manufacturing and region-specific flavours such as kulfi and kesar bhog. In addition, prices in select categories may reportedly be reduced by up to 30% to improve affordability and compete more effectively in the mass market.
Reports indicate that the company is looking to regain market share lost over the years to rivals such as Amul and several regional ice cream brands. Industry competition has intensified as dairy-based products gain popularity among Indian consumers.
Magnum recently acquired a majority stake in Kwality Wall’s India as part of its broader strategy to operate more independently and accelerate growth in emerging markets like India.
As per reports, Magnum Ice Cream Company’s renewed India strategy reflects the growing importance of the country in the global ice cream industry. With a sharper focus on dairy products, cold-chain expansion, and affordability, Kwality Wall’s is aiming to strengthen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing ice cream markets.
