Karur Vysya Bank has partnered with University of Madras to establish the Indigenous & Endangered Languages Laboratory (IELLAB) on the university campus in Chennai. This initiative, supported through the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, is the first dedicated facility in South India focused on preserving and studying indigenous and endangered languages. The lab was inaugurated by Managing Director and CEO B. Ramesh Babu.
The IELLAB is designed as a modern research and documentation centre that combines academic study with technology-based preservation. It will record languages through audio-visual archives and document oral traditions, folklore, rituals, and cultural practices. The lab will also support structured linguistic research and academic publications.
A key focus of the project is strong community involvement. Indigenous elders, scholars, and students will work together to ensure knowledge is passed on to future generations and that cultural traditions remain alive.
In its first phase, the lab will document and study several vulnerable South Indian languages, including Soliga, Kota, Toda, Irula, and Badaga.
The laboratory has been developed with CSR funding from Karur Vysya Bank and implemented through the non-profit partner Gabo Alliance Foundation.
Leaders from the bank and the university highlighted that preserving linguistic heritage is essential for protecting India’s cultural identity and strengthening long-term academic research.
