India’s transition from 4G to 5G is delivering a clear upgrade in mobile internet experience, and Reliance Jio has emerged as the strongest performer across key 5G metrics, according to a latest OpenSignal study. The findings highlight sharp gains in speed, better signal availability and more consistent usage for 5G users across networks.

Jio Users Enjoy Up To 11x Better 5G Speed Vs 4G Speed

The report, based on data collected between September 1 and November 30, 2025, shows that shifting from 4G to 5G results in multi-fold improvements in download speeds. Jio users recorded average 5G download speeds of nearly 200 Mbps, which is around 11 times faster than its 4G network.

Bharti Airtel Delivers 7x Better 5G Speed Vs 4G

Bharti Airtel also delivered strong performance, with 5G speeds around seven times faster than its 4G services. Vodafone Idea’s 5G network showed a meaningful jump as well, with speeds roughly six times higher than its 4G offering. These gains underline how 5G is reshaping mobile data usage in India.

Reliability Matters as Much as Speed

Beyond peak speeds, the study highlighted that 5G users across all operators experienced fewer interruptions and less variation in performance compared to 4G. This means a more stable and predictable internet experience for daily tasks such as video streaming, online payments and work-related usage.

This consistency is becoming a key factor as users increasingly rely on mobile data for essential services.

Jio Leads in Time Spent on 5G

Jio stood out for its ability to convert network availability into actual usage. Users on its network had access to 5G signals for over two-thirds of the time and spent almost the same amount of time actively using 5G. This reflects the strength of its standalone 5G architecture and wider coverage, including better indoor connectivity.

Airtel showed strong availability of 5G signals as well, but users spent a much smaller share of time on 5G. This gap is linked to its non-standalone network design, where 5G still depends on a 4G layer for certain functions. Vodafone Idea recorded lower availability and usage, which aligns with its early-stage 5G rollout.

Growing Adoption Brings New Challenges

With affordable 5G smartphones now widely available, adoption is set to rise quickly. As more users move to 5G, networks will face increasing pressure to maintain quality and consistency at scale.

Conclusion

India’s 5G journey is moving from early adoption to everyday use. While all operators are seeing benefits from the technology shift, Jio currently leads in speed, coverage and real-world usage. The next phase will depend on how well networks balance rapid growth with reliable performance for millions of users.
