Jindal Stainless Limited has supplied around 40% of the total stainless steel requirement for the coach bodies of India's first hydrogen-powered train, strengthening its contribution to the country's next-generation rail infrastructure.
The stainless steel, supplied from the company's Jajpur and Hisar plants, has been used in a train equipped with a hydrogen propulsion system, supporting Indian Railways' transition towards greener mobility solutions.
The company supplied the premium austenitic stainless steel grade X5CrNi1810, which has been selected for the fabrication of the hydrogen-powered train.
According to Jindal Stainless, the material offers corrosion resistance, crash-worthiness, a high strength-to-weight ratio, fire and impact resistance, durability and recyclability. Its lightweight properties also improve energy efficiency, making it suitable for next-generation rail transport.
Jindal Stainless has been supplying stainless steel to Indian Railways for more than three decades, contributing to projects including the first LHB coaches, Vande Bharat Sleeper, India's first Vande Metro, metro and inter-city train sets, wagon bodies and the country's first corrosion-resistant stainless steel salt containers for freight transportation.
The company said these projects reflect the increasing adoption of stainless steel in building safer, more durable and sustainable transportation infrastructure.
Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, said the future of mobility will depend on "cleaner sources of energy" supported by "advanced materials" that improve efficiency, durability and sustainability.
He described the hydrogen-powered train as "an important milestone in the country's clean mobility journey and its vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat," adding that the company remains committed to delivering material solutions that enable innovation, sustainability and long-term value.
As of 17 July 2026, at 2:48 PM, Jindal Stainless Limited share price was trading at ₹736.20 per share, reflecting a decline of 0.18% from the previous trading session.
The supply for India's first hydrogen-powered train reinforces Jindal Stainless role in advancing sustainable transportation. The project also highlights the growing importance of stainless steel in enabling cleaner, safer and more energy-efficient mobility solutions for the country's evolving railway infrastructure.
