The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has started using artificial intelligence-based camera monitoring in more than 800 kitchens that supply food to trains, as per news reports.
The monitoring is being carried out from a newly set up War Room at IRCTC's New Delhi headquarters. Officials can view live feeds from kitchens across the country through a central dashboard.
According to IRCTC, the technology is capable of detecting 9 types of hygiene-related issues.
These include non-compliance with hairnet, glove and headgear requirements, as well as shortcomings in cleaning practices such as mopping and wiping.
The system can also identify the presence of flies, cockroaches, and rodents within kitchen premises.
If a violation is detected, an automated ticket is generated and sent to the contractor concerned for corrective action.
The War Room operates 24 hours a day with teams working in shifts. Reports suggest the facility is to provide a single point for monitoring kitchens and handling operational issues linked to railway catering services.
The dashboard receives inputs from multiple sources, allowing staff to track incidents and complaints as they are reported.
Apart from kitchen surveillance, the platform brings together information from RailMadad complaints, onboard staff reports, CCTV alerts, social media posts, emergency helplines and call centre escalations.
Data from train GPS and telemetry systems is also integrated into the dashboard.
The dashboard includes train-wise complaint heat maps, incident severity indicators, repeat complaint alerts and service-level agreement countdown timers. It also provides performance rankings of railway zones and divisions.
The system is to help officials track complaints and assign responsibility for their resolution through a single platform.
