HAL-Samtel Joint Venture Opens New Defence Avionics Facility in Gurugram

Samtel HAL Display Systems Limited (SHDS), the joint venture between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Samtel Avionics, has opened a new manufacturing facility at Udyog Vihar, Phase IV, Gurugram, as per The Business Standard news report.  

The facility was inaugurated by HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K. The unit will carry out testing and quality checks for advanced display systems.  

It will also be used for the design, development, manufacturing, and product support of systems meant for aircraft and ground-based applications. 

Joint Venture Began Operations in 2006 

SHDS was set up in 2006 and has worked with HAL on the development of defence display systems. The company is India's first public-private defence avionics joint venture to design, qualify and serially produce an indigenous multifunction display for a fighter aircraft. 

One of its multifunction displays is fitted on the Su-30 MKI. According to Samtel Avionics MD and CEO Puneet Kaura, the display programme followed years of work between the two companies on technology that had earlier relied entirely on imports. 

Orders Linked to Helicopter Programmes 

Apart from the Su-30 MKI, SHDS has been selected for HAL's Advanced Light Helicopter programme and is also associated with the Light Combat Helicopter programme. It is exploring work related to the Light Utility Helicopter and the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter programmes. 

Talks on the Light Combat Aircraft programme are still to be finalised. The company expects additional programmes to contribute to its future order pipeline. 

Turnover Expected at Around ₹200 Crore 

SHDS expects to record turnover of around ₹200 crore this year, which would be its highest annual revenue since it was formed. The company said the figure could rise to ₹400-500 crore over the next three to four years as new programmes are added. 

The company holds an industrial licence from the Ministry of Defence. It is also a CEMILAC-approved design house and a DGAQA-approved manufacturing facility.

Conclusion 

The Gurugram facility gives SHDS additional space for manufacturing, testing and support work as its display systems are used across HAL's aircraft and helicopter programmes.
