Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has signed a major contract with the Ministry of Defence to build five next-generation corvettes for the Indian Navy. The contract is part of a combined order worth ₹53,866.50 crore awarded to GRSE and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).

Under the agreement signed on November 2, 2026, GRSE will construct five ships, while GSL will build the remaining three.

₹53,866 Crore Deal for Eight Warships

The contract covers the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs). According to the Defence Ministry, this is the first project in which the Indian Navy has designed the ships and selected defence public sector shipyards to build them through a competitive process.

The vessels will feature advanced missiles, weapons and sensor systems. They are intended to carry out missions across air, surface and underwater domains.

Focus on Navy's Operational Capabilities

The new corvettes are expected to support several naval operations, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, coastal defence and littoral combat. They will also be used for maritime surveillance and safeguarding trade routes.

The project is expected to give a boost to India's domestic shipbuilding industry, with participation from defence shipyards, private shipbuilders and Indian suppliers, including MSMEs.

Employment and Indigenous Manufacturing

The Defence Ministry estimates that construction of the ships will generate around 72 lakh person-days of employment in shipyards and 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs over the next ten years.

The project will also promote the use of Indian-made materials, equipment and technology.
