Grasim Industries Ltd has received regulatory relief after the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) overturned a penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

The tribunal has sent the matter back for reconsideration, marking a development in a case linked to the company’s viscose staple fibre business.

NCLAT Sets Aside CCI Order

The appellate tribunal, through its order dated 5 May 2026, has nullified the earlier decision of the CCI that had imposed a penalty of ₹301.61 crore on Grasim Industries. Along with the financial penalty, the earlier order had also included certain behavioural directives, which have now been set aside.

Background of the Case

The matter relates to a CCI ruling issued on 16 March 2020 concerning Grasim’s viscose staple fibre (VSF) operations. The proceedings were initiated under the Competition Act, 2002, examining aspects of the company’s conduct in this segment.

Following the 2020 order, Grasim had informed stock exchanges and subsequently filed an appeal before the NCLAT, seeking relief from the penalty and associated directives.

Appeal and Interim Developments

After filing the appeal, the company had obtained a stay on the CCI order. During this period, Grasim did not make any financial provision in its accounts for the penalty amount, reflecting its position on the matter being under legal review.

Fresh Hearing Ordered

With the latest ruling, the NCLAT has remanded the case back to the CCI for a fresh hearing and reconsideration. This means that the matter will be re-evaluated by the regulator, and a new decision may be issued based on further examination.

Grasim Industries Share Price Performance

As of 6 May 2026, Grasim Industries Limited’s share price stood at ₹2,877.10, marking an increase of ₹5.60 or 0.20 per cent from the previous close of ₹2,871.50. The movement reflects a limited market response following the development.

Conclusion

The NCLAT’s decision to set aside the penalty and order a fresh hearing provides temporary relief to Grasim Industries. However, as the case returns to the CCI for reconsideration, the final outcome will depend on the regulator’s reassessment of the matter.
