On July 20, 2026, Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited announced the expansion of Poviztra's use for treating non-cirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults, as per the exchange filing.

This follows the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization's (CDSCO) approval, marking a significant development in addressing this progressive liver disease.

CDSCO Approval for MASH Treatment

On July 20, 2026, Emcure Pharmaceuticals revealed that Poviztra, co-marketed with Novo Nordisk, will be used for MASH treatment in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (F2-F3).

The CDSCO's approval of Wegovy for this indication makes it the first GLP-1 receptor agonist approved in India for MASH.

MASH is linked with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic disorders, often remaining asymptomatic until advanced stages.

The approval is backed by the global Phase III ESSENCE trial, where semaglutide showed resolution of steatohepatitis in 63% of patients and improvement in liver fibrosis in 37%.

Role of Poviztra in Addressing MASH

Poviztra contains semaglutide, which has established its role in chronic weight management and is approved for obese patients with cardiovascular disease and adolescent obesity.

The addition of the MASH indication enhances Emcure's commitment to addressing complex metabolic diseases through innovative therapies.
