Cochin Shipyard Share Price Rises 2.6%; Receives Orders for Over 40 Ships from Foreign Countries

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a state-owned shipbuilding company, has received orders to build more than 40 ships for foreign customers, including those from the US, Germany and Norway.
Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal shared the details on Thursday at a press conference, as per The Economic Times news report. The minister did not disclose the total value of the orders or the expected delivery timelines for the vessels.
Ministry Working on Shipbuilding Ecosystem
Sonowal said the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is working to create a suitable environment for shipbuilding in India. He added that the foreign orders received by Indian shipyards reflected confidence in their production quality and capacity.
Cochin Shipyard has received most of the foreign shipbuilding orders mentioned by the minister. However, details about the types of vessels covered by the orders and the individual contracts were not provided.
Russian Entities Express Interest
According to the report, a senior official from the shipping ministry said some Russian entities had also shown interest in building ships in India. The proposed work could involve partnerships with Indian shipyards, including Cochin Shipyard.
Belgium has also expressed its willingness to work with India to promote shipbuilding. No further details about the proposed cooperation with Belgium or the discussions involving Russian entities were shared.
Sonowal said Indian shipbuilders were gaining credibility in international markets. He linked the orders to confidence in the quality of vessels produced in India and the country's ability to build capacity in the sector.
Sonowal Discusses Myanmar's Coastal Shipping
During the second day of the third edition of Sagarmanthan – The Ocean Dialogue, Sonowal met a minister from Myanmar. According to the shipping minister, his Myanmar counterpart said coastal shipping operations in the country were running successfully.
Sonowal also referred to Sittwe Port in Myanmar while discussing the country's coastal shipping activity.
