The Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Limited (BBTCL) received a favourable ruling from the Supreme Court regarding a disputed lease rent claim.

The court's decision comes after the corporation filed an interlocutory application challenging the claim, as per the exchange filings reported on August 26, 2026.

Supreme Court Decision on Lease Rent Claim

On August 19, 2026, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of BBTCL by recalling observations made in its earlier order dated May 29, 2026.

The earlier order had noted that a lease rent of ₹4,655 crore was to be recovered from BBTCL by the state government. However, this amount was neither the subject of a notice served to BBTCL nor determined after a hearing.

The court's decision was based on submissions from BBTCL's senior counsel and the learned Amicus Curiae, highlighting the lack of notice and opportunity for BBTCL to contest the claim.

Background of the Lease Rent Dispute

The dispute arose from ongoing judicial proceedings concerning BBTCL's former tea estate in Singampatti, Tamil Nadu.

The issue of lease rent was not part of the original civil appeals, prompting BBTCL to file an interlocutory application to expunge the claim from the court's records.
