Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a major domestic order for a coal gasification and raw syngas cleaning plant, reinforcing its position in large-scale energy and process engineering projects linked to India’s coal-to-chemicals push.
The order has been awarded by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL), a joint venture between Coal India Limited and BHEL. The Letter of Acceptance was issued on January 8, 2026, for the LSTK-1 package of BCGCL’s Coal-to-2000 tonnes-per-day Ammonium Nitrate project located at Lakhanpur in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district.
The scope covers design, engineering, equipment supply, civil works, erection, commissioning and operations and maintenance services.
Preliminary acceptance, including commissioning and performance guarantee testing, is scheduled within 42 months from the date of award, followed by operations and maintenance for 60 months.
The order value is approximately ₹5,400 crore, excluding GST. It has been awarded on a nomination basis as a domestic contract.
As BHEL is one of the promoter entities of BCGCL, the transaction qualifies as a related-party transaction but has been executed at arm’s length in line with the joint venture agreement between BHEL and Coal India Limited.

The order strengthens BHEL’s execution pipeline in coal gasification and energy transition-linked infrastructure, while also advancing India’s strategic push towards value-added coal utilisation and domestic fertiliser production.
