Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commenced the supply of semi-high-speed underslung traction converters for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project.
This marks a significant achievement in BHEL's 'Make in India' initiative for the rail transportation sector.
On January 8, 2026, BHEL held a flag-off ceremony at its Bengaluru plant to mark the beginning of this supply. Ms. Bani Varma, Director (IS&P) of BHEL, officiated the ceremony, highlighting the strategic entry of BHEL into the semi-high-speed propulsion segment.
The traction converters are being sent to Kolkata for the final assembly of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains. The project is a collaboration between BHEL and TRSL, with key propulsion equipment like traction motors and transformers being developed at BHEL's Bhopal and Jhansi units.
The underslung design of the converters allows for more onboard space, enhancing passenger amenities and payload capacity.
The traction converters are equipped with state-of-the-art IGBT-based technology, enabling operational speeds of up to 160 kmph and a design speed of 176 kmph.
This advanced system ensures high-efficiency power conversion and reliability during long-distance overnight journeys.
