BHEL Share Price Falls Over 2% Following LIC Stake Reduction

On August 18, 2026, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) share price took a bit of a tumble, as it slipped to ₹426.20. That's a drop of 2.24%.  

The stock took a hit after it came out that the Life Insurance Corporation of India, or LIC for short, had sold off a 2% stake in the company on the open market, according to reports filed with the exchange. 

Initial Stake and Share Reduction 

LIC owns a 26,51,28,440 equity shares of BHEL. This means they have a 7.614% stake in the company.  

LIC systematically sold 6,98,84,826 shares starting from May 9, 2024, and concluding on August 14, 2026, through open market transactions. This sale resulted reduction in company stake by 2.007%.  

Remaining Stake and Compliance 

After these transactions, LIC still owns 19,52,43,614 shares of BHEL, which means having a 5.607% stake in the company.  

The total value of BHEL's shares is around ₹696.41 crore. LIC's actions were in compliance with SEBI's substantial takeover regulations, with disclosures sent to both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. 

BHEL's Role in the Power Sector  

BHEL, a central public sector enterprise, plays a crucial role in making power generation equipment. The company's shares have drawn interest as India expands its energy capacity.  

Government programs that support the power sector may influence BHEL's business opportunities and attract more investors.

As of August 18, 2026, at 11:36 AM, BHEL share price on NSE was trading at ₹426.20, down by 2.24% from the previous closing price.  

Conclusion  

BHEL shares traded lower on August 18 at ₹429.65 after LIC sold 6,98,84,826 shares, trimming its stake to 5.607% from 7.614% earlier.
