Axis Bank expects AI and technology to help it grow without increasing employee numbers at the same pace as before. The bank has already opened hundreds of branches while its total headcount declined during the last financial year.

As per Business Standard reports, Axis Bank is looking at technology, employee attrition and redeployment to support its growth. CEO Amitabh Chaudhry said the bank may not need to keep adding employees at the same pace as it did earlier.

The lender had more than 101,000 employees at the end of the financial year in March. At the same time, it opened around 400 new branches during fiscal 2026.

AI To Support Business Growth

Chaudhry said Axis Bank hopes its technology investments will allow the business to grow without a similar increase in staff numbers.

The bank has already seen productivity gains from its technology push. Its cost-to-assets ratio also improved by 18 basis points during the last financial year, showing that the bank was able to handle a larger asset base with fewer employees.

Axis Bank does not plan to let go of employees because of the technology shift, apart from those who are underperforming, according to Chaudhry. Instead, the bank plans to use employee attrition and move existing staff into other roles as its business expands.

New Roles May Emerge

Chaudhry said AI will also create new types of jobs that are different from many of the roles employees have today.

Employees will need to learn new technologies and platforms and adjust to changing responsibilities.

Axis Bank's approach comes as banks around the world increase their use of AI. Executives at JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Standard Chartered have also spoken about AI reducing the need for some roles while increasing productivity.

Foreign Currency Deposits to Be Deployed

Chaudhry also said the large inflow of foreign currency deposits into Indian banks should be deployed over the next two to three quarters.

He expects this money to be put to use as credit growth picks up in India. Axis Bank is India's third-largest private sector lender by assets, behind HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank

Conclusion

Axis Bank is using AI and technology to support business growth while keeping employee additions under control. The bank opened about 400 branches in fiscal 2026 even as its net headcount declined 3%. It is also looking at redeployment and new technology-focused roles as AI becomes a larger part of its operations.
