Sambhv Steel Tubes Lands in Short-Term ASM Stage 1 After 9 Days of Listing
Sambhv Steel Tubes Ltd., a domestic manufacturer of Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) steel pipes and structural tubes, made its stock market debut on July 2. In less than two weeks of trading, the stock has been placed under Stage 1 of the Short-Term Additional Surveillance Measure (ASM) framework, triggered by extreme price volatility and trading activity.
Out of the 9 trading sessions since its listing, the Sambhv Steel Tubes shares witnessed price swings of 5% or more in 5 sessions — a level of volatility that raises red flags for regulators, including the listing day itself.
Why Did Sambhv Enter the ASM Framework?
A stock can be moved into Stage 1 of the short-term ASM framework based on several criteria, including:
- High Price Volatility: If the adjusted close-to-close price variation exceeds 25% in either direction within five trading days, the stock qualifies for Stage 1 monitoring. Sambhv's listing day saw a 19% gain, followed by another 4% rise on July 3. Gains continued with 12% on July 8, 8% on July 9, and 5.1% on July 10 — easily breaching the 25% threshold.
- Concentration of Trading Activity: If the top 25 clients account for 30% or more of the total trading volume (BSE + NSE) over five days, this also flags the stock for surveillance.
- Extended Price Movement: Though not applicable yet, another criterion includes a 40% or greater close-to-close price variation within 15 trading sessions. As Sambhv has not completed 15 sessions, this rule hasn’t been triggered yet.
What Happens Under Stage 1 of Short-Term ASM?
Once a stock is flagged under Stage 1 ASM:
- Margin Requirements Rise: A margin of 1.5 times the existing rate or 40%, whichever is higher, is imposed. However, margins are capped at 100%.
- High-Value Traders Face Stricter Margins: The top 10 clients (based on gross traded value above ₹10 lakh) are subject to a 100% margin on their traded value at the end of the day.
- Exchange Seeks Clarity: Exchanges typically reach out to the company to confirm whether there are any undisclosed material events or corporate announcements.
- Investor Transparency: The stock will be listed on the Exchange’s surveillance dashboard, providing visibility to investors along with relevant trading alerts.
