Hitachi Energy-BHEL Consortium Wins Power Grid Contract for Renewable Energy Link

In partnership with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), Hitachi Energy India has been awarded a contract by Power Grid to design and execute an HVDC link. The project aims to transmit renewable energy from Khavda in Gujarat to Nagpur, Maharashtra’s industrial hub.
Renewable Energy Transmission
The ±800 kV, 6,000 MW HVDC link is a bi-polar, bidirectional system created to carry power from the Khavda area in Gujarat, which is being developed as a renewable energy hub. This initiative is part of Phase-V (8 GW): Part A of the renewable energy zone project, which was awarded to Power Grid through a tariff-based competitive bidding process.
Spanning 1,200 kilometers, the HVDC link plays a crucial role in India’s efforts to integrate renewable energy into its grid. It contributes to the nation’s 500-gigawatt renewable energy evacuation and interstate transmission network, ensuring efficient power transfer across states.
About HDVC Technology
HVDC technology offers the most efficient and cost-effective method for transmitting clean energy over long distances. With its two-way flow capability, it plays a key role in India’s goal of building a robust and adaptable grid for renewable energy.
HVDC technology has revolutionized power transmission and supported renewable energy integration worldwide. In India, over half of the HVDC links in operation, some running successfully for over 30 years, rely on advanced technologies from Hitachi Energy.
