As per a CNBC TV18 report, the West Bengal government has decided to release the October salary of its employees before Durga Puja this year.

Instead of waiting until the last working day of October, the finance department has been asked to credit salaries in advance.

The revised dearness allowance (DA), announced in the state Budget, will also be paid from October, resulting in a higher salary for eligible employees before the festival.

Additional DA to Take Effect

The 20% increase in dearness allowance will come into force from October. DA is a component of salary paid to government employees and pensioners to reduce the impact of inflation on their earnings.

Since it is linked to an employee's basic pay, the amount credited will vary across different pay levels. The state government has not announced any further increase beyond the 20% already approved in the Budget.

Government Reiterates Pay Panel Commitment

The government has also said that it will implement the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission after the panel submits its report. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the commission, constituted recently, is expected to complete its work in the coming months.

The revised pay structure for state government employees will be introduced after the report is received and examined.

DA Gap with Centre Continues

Speaking on the issue of dearness allowance, the Chief Minister said there remains a 42% difference between the DA paid by the Central government and that paid by West Bengal.

He said the gap could not be closed immediately and would require time. He also noted that while several states have already revised the salaries of their employees, West Bengal employees are still waiting for the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission.

Conclusion

The state government has confirmed an advance October salary payment and the rollout of the 20% DA from the same month. The next phase of salary revision will follow the 7th Pay Commission report.
