Today, September 30, 2025, is the final day for central government employees to switch from the National Pension Scheme (NPS) to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). Employees eligible under NPS have a one-time opportunity to make the switch.

Who Can Switch to UPS?

Eligible employees under NPS, including past retirees, can opt for UPS once in their service tenure. This initiative aims to provide employees with an alternative pension option for their post-retirement financial security.

Timeline for Switching

Employees can switch to UPS at least one year before superannuation or three months prior to voluntary retirement. Today, September 30, 2025, is the last date to exercise this option.

Restrictions on Switching

Not all employees are eligible. Those facing removal, dismissal, or compulsory retirement as a penalty cannot avail of this facility. Similarly, cases under disciplinary proceedings or where such action is being contemplated are excluded from the option.

Default Scheme if No Action is Taken

Employees who fail to switch within the deadline will remain under NPS by default. On the other hand, those who choose NPS today will no longer be able to opt for UPS after this deadline.

Can Employees Reconsider?

Employees can still opt to move from UPS to NPS at a later date, but the reverse is not possible. This policy aims to empower employees with a more informed and flexible choice regarding their retirement planning.

Conclusion

With today being the last date, central government employees must carefully weigh the long-term implications before making the switch. Missing the deadline means continuing under NPS automatically.
