Saving towards a financial goal often becomes easier when investments are made regularly instead of in one lump sum. To encourage disciplined savings, the State Bank of India (SBI) offers the Har Ghar Lakhpati Scheme, a recurring deposit (RD) product that enables customers to build a corpus of ₹1 lakh or more through fixed monthly deposits.

The scheme is available to resident individuals, including minors and senior citizens, and allows customers to choose their savings target and investment tenure.

How Does the SBI Har Ghar Lakhpati Scheme Work?

The Har Ghar Lakhpati Scheme is a recurring deposit in which the monthly instalment is calculated based on the target maturity amount. Customers can choose a maturity value of ₹1 lakh or its multiples, such as ₹2 lakh or ₹3 lakh.

The deposit tenure ranges from 3-10 years.

For a maturity amount of ₹1 lakh, the indicative monthly deposits are:

5 Years₹1,420
6 Years₹1,150
7 Years₹960
8 Years₹810
9 Years₹700
10 Years₹610

Eligibility and Interest Rates

The scheme is open to resident individuals who can open the account either singly or jointly. Minors above 10 years who can sign independently are eligible, while younger minors can open an account through their parent or legal guardian.

SBI currently offers the following interest rates under the scheme:

CategoryInterest Rate
General Public6.30%-6.55%
Senior Citizens6.80%-7.05%
SBI Staff7.30%-7.55%

Premature Withdrawal Rules

Customers can close the deposit before maturity, subject to applicable penalties. Deposits of up to ₹5 lakh attract a 0.50% penalty, while deposits above ₹5 lakh attract a 1% penalty.

The applicable interest rate is reduced by the corresponding penalty, and no interest is payable if the deposit remains with the bank for less than 7 days.
