As more tax-related services move online, cyber fraudsters are increasingly using fake emails and messages to target taxpayers. The latest alert comes from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit, which has flagged a fraudulent email claiming to help users download their e-PAN card. The advisory urges taxpayers to remain vigilant and avoid sharing sensitive information through unverified communications.

PIB Fact Check Flags Fake e-PAN Download Email

The PIB Fact Check unit has clarified that an email with the subject line "Download e-PAN Card Online: A Step-by-Step Guide" is fake and should not be trusted. The fraudulent email encourages recipients to click on a link to download their e-PAN card, potentially exposing them to phishing attacks.

In a post on X, PIB Fact Check warned users not to respond to suspicious emails, SMS, phone calls or links seeking financial or personal information. It also advised taxpayers to report such phishing attempts through the Income Tax Department's official channels.

The fact-check unit shared a screenshot of the fake email and clearly marked it as "FAKE" to caution the public against interacting with it.

How to Identify and Report Phishing Emails

According to the Income Tax Department, it does not request confidential information such as bank account PINs, passwords, OTPs or credit card details through email.

If taxpayers receive emails or come across websites pretending to represent the Income Tax Department, they can report them by forwarding the email or the website URL to webmanager@incometax.gov.in.

Before acting on any tax-related communication, taxpayers should verify that it originates from an official government source.

Tips to Stay Safe from Tax-Related Online Scams

To minimise the risk of phishing and identity theft, taxpayers should:

  • Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unsolicited emails.
  • Verify the sender before responding to any tax-related communication.
  • Never share passwords, OTPs or banking credentials over email or SMS.
  • Access income tax services only through the official Income Tax Department portal.
  • Report suspicious emails or websites immediately to the authorities.

Staying alert, using only official government platforms, and reporting suspicious communications can help protect your personal and financial information from online fraud.
