Linking your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar has become an essential compliance requirement for eligible taxpayers in India. Under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961, PAN holders who were allotted their PAN on or before July 1, 2017, are required to link it with Aadhaar. Failure to do so results in the PAN becoming inoperative, which can disrupt income tax refunds, increase TDS deductions, and affect several financial transactions.
Although the original deadline has passed, taxpayers can still complete the linking process by paying a late fee of ₹1,000 through the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal.
The Aadhaar-PAN linking requirement applies to individuals who received their PAN on or before July 1, 2017. It also covers taxpayers who initially obtained a PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID and later need to update their Aadhaar number.
However, certain categories are exempt from this requirement, including:
If your PAN remains inoperative, you may face delayed income tax refunds, higher Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS) rates, and interruptions in tax-related services. Refunds will only be processed after the PAN is reactivated, and no interest will be paid for the period during which it remained inoperative.
Before starting the process, keep your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and the mobile number linked with Aadhaar ready for OTP verification.
First, visit the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal and pay the ₹1,000 late fee under the "Fee for Delay in Linking PAN with Aadhaar" option using the e-Pay Tax facility.
Once the payment is successful, submit the linking request either without logging in or after signing in to the portal. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar details, verify the payment information, complete OTP authentication, and submit the request.
You can also track the request by selecting "Link Aadhaar/View Status" on the portal and entering your PAN and Aadhaar details. The portal will display whether the linking has been completed, is under verification, or requires further action.

Completing the PAN-Aadhaar linking process is essential to ensure uninterrupted access to tax services and avoid unnecessary compliance issues. Taxpayers whose PAN has become inoperative should complete the linking process at the earliest by paying the prescribed fee, helping restore full functionality of their PAN and preventing delays in refunds, higher TDS rates, and other tax-related inconveniences.
