Indian qualifications are now part of New Zealand’s ‘List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment’. This means Indian students don’t need extra evaluation, making the visa process faster and simpler.

Types of Student Visas

Foreign students can choose from different visa categories, each with specific rules about studying, working, and travelling.

  • Student Visa: To study full-time at New Zealand universities.

  • Working Holiday Visa: For young people (18–30 years) who want to work and study while on holiday.

  • Pathway Student Visa: For those planning to study with multiple education providers.

Application Process

  • Applications must be submitted online through Immigration New Zealand’s enhanced system (from 18 Aug 2025).
  • Old forms submitted before 17 Aug 2025 will still be processed. Drafts can be submitted until 17 Sept 2025.
  • Apply at least 3 months before travel to avoid delays, especially during peak periods (Nov–Mar, May–Aug).

Changing Courses or Providers

Students who want to switch courses or institutions must either:

  • Submit a request to change the conditions of their current visa, or
  • Apply for a new student visa if they hold a Pathway Student Visa.

Working Rules for Students

  • Students may work part-time during their studies, depending on visa conditions.
  • From 3 Nov 2025, eligible tertiary and secondary students can work up to 25 hours a week during the semester.
  • If the current visa only allows 20 hours, students must apply for a variation to increase the limit.

Post-Study Opportunities

After completing their course, students can apply for a Post Study Work Visa to stay and work in New Zealand, gaining international career experience.

Conclusion

New Zealand has simplified its student visa rules, making it easier for Indian students and offering more flexible work hours. With the new online system and updated work limits, students can focus on both studies and career growth in New Zealand.
