The upcoming nationwide National Lok Adalat scheduled for December 13 presents a significant opportunity for vehicle owners to clear long-pending traffic challans and minor compoundable offences at substantially reduced rates. Many states are offering discounts ranging from 50% to even 100% on selected violations, making it a highly beneficial event for motorists burdened by accumulated fines.

Eligible Violations for Settlement

The Lok Adalat will focus exclusively on minor and compoundable traffic offences. These include not wearing a helmet or seat belt, signal jumping, normal overspeeding, illegal parking and driving without a valid Pollution Under Control certificate.

Motorists can also resolve missing number plate cases, vehicle fitness-related fines, driving without a licence and certain incorrectly issued challans raised in error.

Old e-challans that remain unpaid due to oversight or technical issues can also be cleared during the session. The key advantage is the on-the-spot closure of cases with a reduced penalty.

Non-Eligible Serious Offences

Not all traffic-related offences fall under the Lok Adalat’s scope. Serious violations such as drunk driving, rash or dangerous driving, hit-and-run cases or any incident involving injury or loss of life are strictly excluded. These require regular court proceedings and cannot be disposed of through this one-day settlement mechanism.

States Participating in the Drive

Several states are expected to participate in this nationwide initiative. Prominent among them are Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Rajasthan and West Bengal. Each state may announce separate discount brackets or procedural guidelines, but all will follow the common objective of reducing pending traffic cases and easing the burden on courts.

Steps to Check and Pay Challans

Vehicle owners must start by checking their pending challans on the Parivahan portal or their respective state police websites. They should save or print the challan details and book a token if required.

On Lok Adalat day, individuals must visit the designated court or traffic court with their RC, driving licence, valid ID proof and challan documents.

Judges and traffic officials will apply the fine reductions, after which the final payment can be made via cash or UPI. A Lok Adalat settlement order will then be issued, marking the permanent closure of the case.

Conclusion

The December 13 National Lok Adalat offers a rare opportunity for motorists to resolve minor traffic challans easily and at minimal cost. By clearing pending fines, vehicle owners can avoid future legal complications while helping reduce the overall burden on the judicial system.
