After the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, central government employees and pensioners are eagerly waiting for clarity on salary and pension hikes. Once the commission finalises its report and the government approves it, revised salaries will be implemented for Group A, B, C and D employees.

Pension payouts will also be revised based on the new basic pay.

What Decides the Salary Increase?

The key factor in any pay commission is the fitment factor. It is a multiplier used to revise the existing basic pay.

For example, during the 7th Pay Commission, a fitment factor of 2.57 increased the minimum basic salary from ₹7,440 to ₹18,000.

Final salary hike under the 8th Pay Commission will largely depend on the fitment factor approved.

Expected Fitment Factor in the 8th Pay Commission

As per news reports, the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission could be in the range of 1.83 to 2.86, with most expectations between 1.9 and 2.5. However, a factor similar to the 7th Pay Commission (2.57) is also possible.

Salary Hike if Fitment Factor Is 2.15

If the fitment factor is set at 2.15, the revised basic pay may look like this:

  • Level 1 (Group D entry level):
    Current basic: ₹18,000 → Revised: ₹38,700 → Increase: ₹20,700
  • Level 10 (Group A entry level):
    Current basic: ₹56,100 → Revised: ₹1,20,615 → Increase: ₹64,515
  • Level 18 (Senior-most Group A):
    Current basic: ₹2,50,000 → Revised: ₹5,37,500 → Increase: ₹2,87,500

Salary Hike if Fitment Factor Is 2.57

If the fitment factor remains 2.57, salaries may increase as follows:

  • Level 1 (Group D):
    ₹18,000 → ₹46,260 → Increase: ₹28,260
  • Level 10 (Group A):
    ₹56,100 → ₹1,44,177 → Increase: ₹88,077
  • Level 18 (Group A senior-most):
    ₹2,50,000 → ₹6,42,500 → Increase: ₹3,92,500

Salary Hike if Fitment Factor Is 2.86

If the government approves a higher fitment factor of 2.86, the revised pay could be:

  • Level 1 (Group D):
    ₹18,000 → ₹51,480 → Increase: ₹33,480
  • Level 10 (Group A officer):
    ₹56,100 → ₹1,60,446 → Increase: ₹1,04,346
  • Level 18 (Top Group A level):
    ₹2,50,000 → ₹7,15,000 → Increase: ₹4,65,000

Conclusion

The final salary hike under the 8th Pay Commission will depend on the fitment factor approved by the government. A higher fitment factor will mean a bigger increase in basic pay and pensions for central government employees and retirees.
