The Finance Ministry has decided to raise the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, as per The Moneycontrol news report.

This change, aimed at expanding mandatory provident fund and pension coverage, will come into effect following Cabinet approval, with implementation anticipated by April 1, 2027.

Changes to EPF Wage Ceiling

The Finance Ministry approved an increase in the EPF wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, a government source said.

This adjustment will require salaried employees earning up to ₹25,000 in basic pay to be automatically covered by the government scheme, thereby broadening the framework of social security for private sector workers.

Previously, only employees earning up to ₹15,000 per month were covered obligatorily under the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS). With this amendment, those earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 will also be included.

Increased Financial Commitments

The revision is expected to raise the government's financial obligations. Currently, employers contribute 8.33% of an employee's basic pay towards the pension fund, while the government adds 1.16%. The EPS received a budget allocation of ₹11,144 crore for the fiscal year 2026-2027.

Implementation Timeline and Compliance

The implementation of the revised wage ceiling is planned for April 1, 2027, post-Cabinet approval. This timeline provides ample time for businesses to adapt their payroll and compliance systems to adhere to the new regulations.

Mandatory EPF and EPS coverage pertains to establishments with 20 or more employees. Smaller businesses may register voluntarily but are not bound to do so. This amendment mainly impacts the organised private sector, excluding central government employees who are under separate pension schemes.

Conclusion

Finance Ministry’s decision to raise the EPF wage ceiling to ₹25,000 from ₹15,000 will increase the coverage of the mandatory provident fund and pension, affecting government financial commitments toward the scheme. The government had earlier considered a ceiling of ₹30,000 before finalising on ₹25,000. The rollout is expected on April 1, 2027.
