The Finance Ministry has approved a 25% increase in kilometerage allowance (KMA) for running railway staff, a move that is expected to benefit lakhs of employees, as per news reports.

This development comes as discussions around the 8th Pay Commission gain momentum.

Significance of the KMA Hike for Railway Employees

The All India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF) has confirmed the approval of a 25% hike in KMA for running staff, including loco pilots and guards.

This allowance is a crucial part of their earnings, as it compensates them based on the distance covered while on duty.

Unlike standard travel allowances, KMA is tailored to the unique demands of railway operations.

Shiv Gopal Mishra, General Secretary of AIRF, described this approval as a significant achievement, resulting from persistent efforts and discussions with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and Finance Ministry officials.

Understanding Kilometerage Allowance

KMA is vital for running staff who do not receive standard travel allowances like TA or DA. Instead, they are compensated based on the kilometres they cover.

A minimum guarantee system ensures that employees are paid for a fixed minimum distance, even if they cover fewer kilometres on a given day.

This structure makes KMA an essential component of their monthly income.

Impact on Monthly Earnings

The 25% increase in KMA is expected to raise monthly incomes, though the exact benefit will vary.

For instance, an employee earning ₹10,000 as KMA could now receive around ₹12,500, offering financial relief to many.

The timing of this hike aligns with the framework that revises certain allowances once dearness allowance reaches 50%.

Conclusion

The approval of a 25% increase in KMA for railway employees marks a significant development, benefiting lakhs of workers involved in train operations. This decision is seen as an important step ahead of broader salary revisions anticipated with the 8th Pay Commission.
