The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has implemented the Supreme Court's November 2022 directive by issuing 1,49,806 pension payment orders for higher contributions to retired applicants, as per the Mint news report.

This comes as part of measures to support retirees through enhanced contributions based on actual wages, thereby increasing their pension benefits.

EPFO Pension Claims

Minister Shobha Karandlaje reported to Lok Sabha that 15,24,365 higher pension claims were received. Out of these, 11,595 claims remained pending as of August 5, 2026.

Additionally, the government issued 1,49,806 pension payment orders (PPOs) on higher wages. This action followed the Supreme Court order passed in 2022.

Pensioners and Disbursements

By March 31, 2026, the total number of EPS pensioners reached 85,84,604. The total amount of pension disbursed under this scheme reached ₹15,819.28 crore.

The minister stated that EPS 2026 has officially superseded EPS 1995. The Centre aims to ensure social security while maintaining the financial sustainability of the fund.

EPS Withdrawal Rules

The EPFO introduced a 12-month waiting period for premature final EPF settlement. It also set a 36-month waiting period for standard withdrawal benefits under the EPS.

However, rules for partial withdrawals and advances have been simplified. Members can now withdraw up to 75% of their total balance under three specific categories.

Withdrawal Guide and Facilities

These withdrawals cover unemployment expenses, medical emergencies, education, and housing. Members can claim 75% of their balance twice each year without providing specific reasons.

Subscribers can easily check their pension claim status through multiple options. These include the official EPFO portal, the Umang app, SMS, or missed call services.

How Subscribers Can Verify Their Pension Claims

Subscribers interested in verifying their pension claims can utilise EPFO's digital facilities. These include the EPFO portal, Umang app, SMS, and missed call services. Each of these methods is designed to provide easy access to claim status and details efficiently.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Umang App

To check claim status, users must download the Umang app, register with their Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and create an M-PIN.

After signing in, they should search for EPFO, access "Employee Centric Services," and select "Track Claim." Using their 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN), users can generate an OTP, login, and view their claims in detail.

Using the EPFO Portal for Claim Status

Subscribers can check claims through the portal by logging in at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface.

They should navigate to "Online Services" and select "Track Claim Status" to view their tracking ID, form type, and current status.

Additionally, the EPFO toll-free numbers 1800 118 005 or 1800 114 470 are available for claim inquiries.

Conclusion

EPFO has issued 1,49,806 pension payment orders as per the Supreme Court's 2022 order. The shift to higher pension contributions accommodates the Supreme Court's instructions for increased social security.
