The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has revealed 4 strategic measures aimed at expediting the processing of higher pension claims under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), as per The Business Today news report.

This initiative follows a 2022 Supreme Court judgment mandating contributions on higher wages for eligible employees.

Online Joint Options Submission

EPFO has introduced an online facility enabling members to submit applications for validating Joint Options.

This online process, established post Supreme Court judgment, permits eligible employees and pensioners to exercise their option for higher pension through the EPFO system. Applications are subject to verification before finalising pensions.

Processing Applications Under Relevant Regulations

EPFO is processing higher pension applications per relevant provisions. Application submission does not automatically approve the pension; rather, they undergo a verification process involving contribution record checks and employer coordination, essential for enhanced pension calculation.

Guidelines for Regional Offices

EPFO issued instructions to its Regional Offices to expedite the timely disposal of higher wages pensions. This signifies an oversight mechanism extending beyond central EPFO, urging regional offices to facilitate swift verification and processing of claims.

Conducting Regular Video Conference Reviews

EPFO conducts regular video conferences with its Zonal and Regional Offices to monitor progress in higher pension applications, identifying processing barriers. This approach aims to improve coordination between employees, employers, and EPFO, although systemic gaps could delay decisions.

Time-Bound Implementation Without Fresh Deadlines

While implementing the Supreme Court's directions in a time-bound manner, EPFO has not announced a new universal deadline for resolving all pending claims or disbursing pension arrears. The organisation commits to maximizing benefits for workers under EPS-2026 while considering the pension fund's financial health.

Conclusion

EPFO's strategy to clear pending higher pension claims involves introducing an online application facility, processing application verifications, instructing regional offices, and conducting regular reviews. However, no new deadline has been set for claim resolution or pension arrears distribution.
