The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) recorded that 79% of Universal Account Numbers (UANs) generated in FY26 were attributed to individuals aged 18-30, as per news reports. This youth-oriented workforce trend particularly showcases Gen Z's increasing participation in formal employment.

Gen Z's Role in the Organised Sector

According to EPFO data, the 18-25 age group comprises 59% of new subscriptions. Within this bracket, individuals aged 21-25 form the largest segment, making up 35% of new UAN enrolments. This data underscores Gen Z's active involvement in structured job markets.

Female Workforce Engagement

The report highlights a notable rise in women's engagement in the formal workforce. During 2025-26, 28% of new UANs were issued to women.

Additionally, women accounted for 26% of the apprenticeship contracts under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, facilitating their transition from education to employment.

Growth in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities

Decentralisation of the workforce has led to 69% of the employment shifting to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Factors driving this include retail expansion and diversified business operations in these regions.

Educational Attainments of the Workforce

The workforce is experiencing an education boost, with 96% having completed high school, 61% achieving Class 12, and 30% holding degrees or postgraduate qualifications. Furthermore, women represent 25% of postgraduates and hold 23% of Class 10 certifications, indicating diverse skill levels among genders.

Unemployment and Skills Mismatch

Despite these trends, a mismatch persists between employment and skills. Around 40% of graduates aged 15-29 remain unemployed, while more than 50% are in positions below their qualifications. Only 8.25% of degree holders have roles aligned with their skills.

Conclusion

EPFO data from FY26 indicates that 79% of UANs are attributed to those aged 18-30, with Gen Z significantly engaged in the formal workforce. Women's participation rose to 28%, with 26% in apprenticeships, while a skills mismatch continues to affect employment scenarios.
