Don’t Miss the December 31 Deadline: Link Your PAN With Aadhaar to Keep It Active

If you haven’t linked your PAN with your Aadhaar yet, make sure to do it before December 31, 2025. As per the Income Tax Department, PAN cards not linked with Aadhaar by this date will become inoperative from January 1, 2026. This could affect your income, investments, and tax-related activities.
Why is PAN-Aadhaar Linking Important Before the December 31 Deadline?
The government made PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory to ensure transparency and accountability in the tax system.
According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), individuals who received their PAN before July 1, 2017, must link it with Aadhaar.
Similarly, taxpayers getting their PAN by October 1, 2025, should complete the linking process by the end of December 2025.
If you apply for a new PAN after July 1, 2025, the linking will be done automatically during the application process.
What Happens If You Miss the December 31 Deadline?
If your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025, it will become inoperative from January 1, 2026. This can cause several problems, including:
- Inability to file Income Tax Returns (ITR)
- Delay or stoppage in refund processing
- TDS/TCS details not showing up in Form 26AS
- Higher TDS/TCS deductions
- Difficulty in bank transactions and SIPs
- Inability to update KYC for bank, mutual funds, or stock market accounts
Once you link your PAN and Aadhaar later, your PAN will be reactivated within 30 days.
Will Your Money Be Lost?
No, your existing bank balance and investments will remain safe even if your PAN becomes inactive. However, your ability to make new investments, buy or sell shares, or start or stop SIPs will be temporarily blocked until your PAN is reactivated.
Who Needs To Link PAN And Aadhaar Before December 31 Deadline?
As per the Finance Ministry’s April 2025 notification, anyone who got a PAN using their Aadhaar Enrolment ID before October 1, 2024, must link it by December 31, 2025. This rule applies to all individual taxpayers.
