The Centre has asked pensioners to use face authentication technology to submit their annual Digital Life Certificates (DLCs) without visiting banks or government offices, as per Livemint news report.

The Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare (DoPPW) has also urged retirees to encourage others to use the facility.

Nationwide Digital Life Certificate Campaign

Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary of DoPPW, made the appeal at a pensioners' awareness event in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The event was held at Punjab National Bank's (PNB) Parliament Street branch in collaboration with the DoPPW. It was organised under the fifth nationwide DLC campaign, which is running from November 1 to November 30 across 2,000 cities and districts.

Verma asked pensioners to share their experiences of using digital services and encourage other retirees to adopt face authentication for pension verification.

Pensioners Can Submit Certificates Using Smartphones

Pensioners are required to submit a life certificate every year to continue receiving their pension. Earlier, this meant visiting a bank branch or a designated office for verification.

The government introduced the Jeevan Pramaan platform to allow electronic submission of life certificates through biometric authentication. Face authentication now allows pensioners to complete the process using a smartphone from their homes.

The facility removes the need for routine visits to banks, particularly for elderly pensioners and those who have difficulty travelling. Banks and post offices also provide doorstep services for pensioners who cannot complete the process themselves.

Face Authentication Submissions Increase to 1.25 Crore

Dhrubajyoti Sengupta, Joint Secretary of DoPPW, said the digital life certificate system was introduced in 2014, while face authentication was added in 2021.

Certificates submitted through face authentication increased from around 50 lakh to nearly 1.25 crore during the previous campaign. More than 14 lakh pensioners aged 80 years and above also submitted their certificates during that period.
