India's mutual fund industry is taking another step towards improving financial inclusion with the launch of NCDEX Nidhi, a new mutual fund transaction platform by the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX). The platform is designed to make mutual fund investing more accessible in rural and semi-urban areas by leveraging technology, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), and partnerships with leading asset management companies (AMCs).
NCDEX Nidhi has been built on an API-first architecture, allowing mutual fund distributors to either use the platform directly or integrate its APIs into their own systems. The platform offers several features aimed at improving the investment experience, including accurate transaction timestamping, universal SIP autopay across major UPI apps, detailed transaction failure reasons, and support for both lump sum and SIP investments.
The platform also introduces flexible SIP options, making it easier for investors with irregular income patterns, particularly those in rural areas, to invest consistently in mutual funds.
NCDEX plans to use its existing network of around 800 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to expand mutual fund distribution. According to the exchange, each FPO has an average of about 250 members, creating a significant opportunity to introduce mutual funds to first-time investors.
NCDEX will assist FPOs in obtaining the necessary certifications to become mutual fund distributors. Depending on their preference, FPOs can either distribute mutual funds within their organisations or offer them to the general public. The exchange believes this model will help build trust among rural investors who are traditionally more inclined towards fixed deposits and gold.
NCDEX has already partnered with five leading AMCs and plans to onboard around 15 more fund houses over the next one to two months. The exchange also intends to collaborate with cooperative organisations to further strengthen its distribution network.
Beyond mutual funds, NCDEX is exploring the launch of weather-related derivatives, platinum and freight derivative contracts, while also evaluating opportunities to expand into the securities markets of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh through strategic partnerships.

With NCDEX Nidhi, the exchange is seeking to bridge the investment gap between urban and rural India by combining digital infrastructure with its established FPO network. If adopted widely, the platform could improve mutual fund penetration in underserved regions while creating new income opportunities for rural institutions and broadening participation in India's capital markets.
